A turnbuckle designed to remain adjustable for life and protected from the salt and iodine aggression of the marine environment; whereas an open turnbuckle with exposed threads remains dependent on maintenance and time.
Stainless steel offers a superior strength-to-size ratio and fatigue resistance compared to solid bronze. For the same dimensions, the body can withstand a higher working load with a greater safety margin. This is the structural foundation: there is no compromise on the link that secures the mast.
Bronze has always been a non-seizing bearing material. By inserting a bronze bushing at the adjustment interface, the stainless steel-on-stainless steel contact responsible for cold welding is eliminated. The turnbuckle remains operable and adjustable throughout its entire lifespan-it can be tightened, loosened, inspected, and replaced. This is the most tangible advantage for a rigger: no seizing, no cutting, no recalls.
The watertight seal isolates the threads and the working interface from the marine atmosphere. No water penetration, no salt crystallization in the threads, no iodine at the heart of the mechanism. The functional area operates in a controlled environment, not in the sea spray.
This is the argument that distinguishes a manufactured product from an assembled one:
Stainless steel needs oxygen to maintain its protective passive layer. Confined in a chlorinated environment and deprived of oxygen, bare stainless steel can develop pitting corrosion. Sealing a bare stainless-steel thread would therefore be an engineering mistake. This is precisely why our working surface is not made of bare stainless steel, but of bronze: bronze retains its corrosion resistance even in confined and oxygen-poor environments. Waterproofing and the choice of bronze are not two separate arguments; they form a single, coherent logic. We seal what needs to be sealed, with the material that can withstand being sealed.
